Widely distributed in the plant kingdom, quercetin is the most abundant of the flavonoid molecules, a class of antioxidant commonly found in fruits. It is found in many foods, including apples, onions, teas, berries, cabbage, seeds, and nuts. Quercetin has been widely established for the treatment of a variety of ailments. Quercetin decreases the formation and activity of inflammation in a manner that is similar to that of aspirin.
Quercetin inhibits the release of histamine by stabilizing the cellular membranes of neutraphils, which are a type of immune cell. Quercetin is therefore widely used by those who suffer from constant allergies (i.e. dust) and seasonal allergies (i.e. hay fever).
Other benefits include cardiovascular support and protection of the gastrointestinal tract. A number of quercetin‘s beneficial effects appear to be due to its antioxidant activity. Quercetin scavenges free radicals and inhibits the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. By itself, and when paired with Vitamin C, quercetin reduces the incidence of oxidative damage to skin and nerves caused by glutathione depletion.
In a study investigating the risk factors for chronic diseases in elderly men, it was revealed that high intakes of quercetin and other flavonoids predicted lower mortality rates and incidences of heart attack.
Researchers in the Netherlands believe it is possible that quercetin and other flavonoids reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering the formation of plaque-building substances, specifically oxidized low density lipoprotein (LDL).
